Puerto Plata, officially San Felipe de Puerto Plata, is the 3rd largest city in Dominican Republic. It is also the capital of the Puerto Plata Province. In this trading port is located the first aerial tramway of the Caribbean. The city is also said to be the birthplace of tourism in the country. Playa Dorada
Playa Dorada-the primary hub of tourist activities, is a stretch of the golden-sand beach. Here are most of the all-inclusive resorts of the area. With cabanas full of sunbathers & lounge chairs lining along the ocean, it is one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic. With several hotels, restaurants, & shopping centers in its proximity; one does not have to leave the beach to get food, drinks, & souvenirs. Mount Isabel de Torres
Mount Isabel de Torres (also known as Pico Isabella de Torres) is the 2600 ft high. From here one capture the panoramic views of the city, Atlantic Ocean, & beach. The cable car runs to help tourists ride up & down; though, one can also choose hike up the mountain top. The statue of Christ the Redeemer sits on the peak, watching over the city below. Vendors gather around the statue to sell refreshments & souvenirs such as amber jewelry & handmade crafts.
Damajagua Waterfalls
The Damajagua Waterfalls is one of the top natural attractions in Puerto Plata. A visit to the place is no less than an adventure for nature lovers. One can make their way downstream by jumping, swimming, & sliding via stone waterslides that were carved by the rushing water. The most amazing & exiting part is the 20 ft drop at la Tinajita & the twisty Corkscrew falls; neither of which is for a fainthearted. Other highlights include a bizarre pool & the pool at Jaiba. The former has two layers of water- cold on the top & warm in the bottom.
Zipline Adventure & Eco-Tour
Another amazing activity to indulge in is ziplining through "Monkey Jungle" which should not be missed by nature lovers & adventure seekers. Sitting at the edge of the El Choco National Park, the jungle has a lively population of squirrel monkeys. One can take a guided tour which lasts for 5-6 hours (including transportation to the park) to reach the 2 suspension bridges & 7 ziplines. Apart from this, visitors get to explore the Monkey Jungle with a professional naturalist learning about the ecosystem & interacting with the friendly primates.
The best time to visit the city of Puerto Plata are the months from December to March. Also, one can plan visiting here in May & June for an economical trip. Though, do remember these are the rainy months.
